Shidler Scholarships At Shidler, summer scholarships for studying abroad are a little harder to come by than they are in the Spring/Fall. There are some study abroad scholarships earmarked in STAR. These scholarships may not necessarily be specifically for the summer, but I say that it doesn't hurt to apply for them anyways. They'll be open when the UH STAR Scholarship System opens, which is typically towards the ending of the Fall semester. Applications usually close in March!
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship The Gilman Scholarship program is funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and assisted in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The purpose of the program is to support undergraduate U.S. citizens of limited financial means in their study abroad endeavors.
The deadline to apply depends on the semester and year you will be going abroad. My application deadline was in March, but it was extended (likely due to COVID), so I can't guarantee that the deadline is always in March for the summer. As soon as you know you're interested in studying abroad, you should regularly check the website for deadlines and updates!
Tip: The scholarship is highly competitive, but don't be discouraged! Focus on what makes you stand out and highlight any unique circumstances that you feel is important to differentiate yourself from other students.
If you are selected, you can receive up to $5,000, along with other perks, such as access to the alumni networking system, travel webinars, up to 5 free advising sessions if you need help abroad, etc.!!!
