I'd have to say that the housing process was much smoother for me than it was last spring. After the whole debacle of being waitlisted for a dorm and having my payment wired to the wrong account, I made sure to be extra proactive this year.
First things first, Yonsei updated their dormitory site! It is well organized and there is a lot more information about the dorms and your account.
There are usually 3 different housing options that you can choose from (from least to most expensive):
Double room at International House
Double room at SK Global House
Single room at SK Global House
However, due to the pandemic, Yonsei only offered single rooms in the SK Global House. I really enjoyed my (very) short experience in SK Global, so I was super happy with the option!
The application period was between April 6th (10AM KST) - April 20th. Be sure to remember that all the dates and times are given in Korean Standard Time! Although I feel that summer housing was not as competitive as it was during my spring experience, it's still better to log on AS SOON as the application opens because it moves pretty quick. The application only takes about a minute to complete, but by the time I submitted it, there were less than 30 slots left.
**Tip: Many students were confused about the "Detailed Address" field on the application. I'm actually still not sure what it means, but I emailed Yonsei and they told me it's not that important, so you can just write that you do not have one!**
Soon after the application period closes, Yonsei will email you an invoice with the total payment required. The invoice includes an account number that is specifically assigned to you - you'll need this account number when you wire your money! Many students in the discord chat have said they've used transferwise to wire their payment because the transfer fee was fairly cheap. However, I used my bank to wire the payment just because I felt that it was a little more secure.
Since the exchange rate fluctuates, I paid about $20 extra just to ensure that I won't have to wire another payment again. Yonsei eventually refunds any overpayments (:
It takes about two weeks for Yonsei to receive your payment, so I suggest emailing them a copy of your receipt so they know that you've paid in time!
Off-Campus Housing... There are lots of airbnbs off-campus and many students have actually preferred this option, but due to the pandemic I've personally felt more comfortable in a single room. But if you are interested in going this route, I highly suggest joining the Yonsei Facebook Group. I found this group to be one of the easiest ways to start networking and stay updated on things. It also often leads to group chats and (and even a discord chat this year!) that include all the students going in the same semester as you. Once you start talking to everyone you'll be able to find people who are also interested in splitting housing!
